Made Mantle Hood
Project 1: Introducing My EthnomusicologistMade Mantle Hood, son of the famous Ki Mantle Hood, is an ethnomusicologist whose passion for this field has existed for as long as he can remember. Hood’s fascination for ethnomusicology stems from his early exposure to performing-arts graduate students from Ghana, Indonesia, Korea, and many other countries. Also playing an important role in his ethnomusicology background was his mother, Hazel Chung who helped Hood to better understand movement arts. To begin his education, Hood completed a Bachelor of Arts in Ethnomusicology at the University of Maryland in 1992. Before receiving his Masters from the University of Hawaii in 2001, Hood received a multitude of awards including the Citizen Citation Award from Mayor Kurt Schmoke in the city of Baltimore in 1998. Following his graduation from the University of Hawaii, Hood completed his PhD at the University of Cologne, Germany while being a member of the Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society. Following the completion of his higher education, Hood went on to become a lecturer in Ethnomusicology at Monash University in 2005. In 2008 he received the Dean’s Teaching Award from the Faculty of Arts from the same university. 3 years following the award, Hood left to become a Research Fellow at Melbourne University in 2011. After only 2 years, Hood left and became the Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at Universiti Putra Malaysia which he stayed at for 5 years until 2018. Currently, Hood teaches Balinese Music and Dance Kebyar at the National Taiwan University. Regarding research interests, he focuses on Southeast Asian Music Culture and Gamelan Music.
